AC maintenance & tune-up
The failures that ruin Julyare visible in April.
A capacitor drifting out of tolerance, a charge slowly leaking down, a condenser coil packed with valley dust. All measurable months before they take your cooling out on the hottest weekend of the year. That is what a real tune-up is for.

Timing
Book it in spring, not in a heat wave
A tune-up is only worth having if it happens before the load arrives. Once the valley hits triple digits, every HVAC company in Fresno is running emergency calls, maintenance slots disappear, and a marginal capacitor has already had six weeks to fail.
March through May is the window. If you are reading this in August, book anyway — a loaded condenser coil is costing you money every month it stays dirty — but the ideal time is before the first hundred-degree day.
Mar – May
The right window. Full availability, problems found before they matter, and time to schedule any repair calmly.
Jun – Aug
Still worth doing, particularly the coil clean. Scheduling is tighter and anything we find needs fixing sooner.
Sep – Feb
Quiet season, easy to book. Good time to catch up if the system went a year without service, and to pair with the heating check.
What is actually included
Grouped by where the technician works. If a company will not publish a list like this before you book, that tells you something about what the visit contains.
Outdoor unit
- Condenser coil cleaned
- Refrigerant charge verified by superheat and subcooling
- Capacitors read in microfarads against rated value
- Contactor inspected for pitting and voltage drop
- Fan motor and blade checked, amp draw measured
- Line set insulation and connections inspected
- Disconnect, wiring and terminals checked
- Clearances and pad level verified
Indoor unit and condensate
- Evaporator coil inspected for fouling
- Blower wheel inspected, cleaned where needed
- Blower motor amp draw checked
- Condensate drain cleared and flushed
- Float switch tested, not just looked at
- Drain pan checked for standing water and corrosion
- Filter condition assessed and replaced if you have one on hand
- Cabinet panels and obvious duct leaks at the plenum checked
Performance measurements
- Total external static pressure
- Supply and return temperature split
- Compressor amp draw against the data plate
- Condenser approach temperature
- Supply voltage under load
- Thermostat calibration and staging
You get every reading, plus photos of anything we find. If something is trending toward failure but has not failed yet, we tell you that too — and what it will likely cost when it does.
The elephant in the room
Why we do not advertise a $59 tune-up
You will see them all over Fresno every spring. They are rarely a maintenance offer in any meaningful sense — they are a way to buy a conversation in your driveway for less than the cost of a lead, and the visit only makes sense for the company if something gets sold while the technician is standing there.
That is not automatically dishonest. Plenty of good work follows a discounted tune-up. But it does mean the technician arrives with a commercial reason to find something, and you have no way of knowing whether the thing he found was genuinely failing or merely findable.
A tune-up priced below what the visit costs to deliver has to earn its money somewhere else. Usually while you are standing in the yard agreeing with him.
How to tell a real tune-up from a lead-generation visit
- No instruments came out of the truck beyond a screwdriver and a hose
- You were given no numbers — no superheat, no static pressure, no capacitance
- The visit took twenty minutes, most of it spent on the paperwork
- It ended with a replacement quote rather than a condition report
- The urgency arrived before the evidence did
- Refrigerant was added without anyone looking for the leak
What we actually find on a Fresno tune-up
Six things account for most of what turns up, and every one of them is cheaper to deal with in April than in July.
-
A capacitor drifting out of tolerance
The single most common find. Run capacitors degrade gradually and measurably, and one reading in microfarads tells us whether yours will survive August. An inexpensive part tested in a minute, versus a no-cooling call on the hottest weekend of the year.
-
A condenser coil packed with valley dust
Fresno's agricultural particulate loads coils faster than almost anywhere. A dirty coil raises head pressure, drives the electric bill up every month, and works the compressor harder than it was designed for. More on what drives up your bill.
-
Refrigerant slowly low
Refrigerant is not consumed, so a system reading low has a leak. Found in spring it is a repair. Found in July it is often a compressor that has already been running starved for weeks.
-
Airflow being strangled
High static pressure from a restricted filter, an undersized return or crushed flex duct. It kills blowers, freezes coils, and quietly caps the capacity you already paid for.
-
A condensate drain half blocked
Not yet enough to trip the float switch, but on the way. This is the difference between clearing a drain in spring and a ceiling repair in August.
-
A pitted contactor
Burned contacts starve the compressor of the voltage it needs to start, producing intermittent faults that look mysterious until someone measures the voltage drop across them.
One tune-up, or the plan?
Both get you the same visit. The difference is what happens the rest of the year.
Single tune-up
Book it when you want it
- The full cooling tune-up above
- All readings and photos
- No commitment of any kind
- You remember to book it again next year
Comfort Maintenance Plan

- This cooling visit plus a fall heating visit
- Priority scheduling when the valley is slammed
- Member repair pricing on anything found

What Fresno homeowners say
★★★★★
I had a great experience with this AC service company! From the moment I called, they were professional, responsive, and knowledgeable. The technician arrived on time, diagnosed the issue quickly, and explained everything clearly.

I realized something was wrong with my AC when I got home Tuesday afternoon and noticed it wasn't blowing cold air. I called them right away, and they were able to send a technician to my Fresno home that same evening. The repair only took about 45 minutes, and everything was back to normal once the work was done.

Wow! Just an amazing experience! Air conditioner went out and they were able to get it fixed the same day! Wonderful crew and extremely nice. Would definitely use again.

Tune-up questions
How often should I have my AC serviced?
Once a year for cooling, ideally in spring before the first triple-digit stretch. Fresno systems log far more run hours per season than the national average, and components wear on hours rather than birthdays, so annual service matters more here than in most of the country.
How long does a tune-up take?
Usually around an hour, sometimes longer if the coil needs serious cleaning or a reading sends us looking for something. A twenty-minute visit is not a tune-up, whatever it says on the invoice.
Will you try to sell me a new system?
No. If your system measures within specification we will tell you it is fine and leave. Two visits a year is a great deal of opportunity to invent problems, and we would rather keep you as a customer for a decade than win one invoice today.
Do I need a tune-up if the AC seems to be working fine?
That is exactly when it is worth doing. Most of what a tune-up catches has not caused a symptom yet — a capacitor drifting low, a slow leak, a coil loading up. By the time you notice something, the cheap window has usually closed.
Does maintenance actually lower my electric bill?
A dirty condenser coil and a poor refrigerant charge both make the system work harder for the same cooling, so correcting them does reduce consumption. It will not offset a leaking duct system or a poorly insulated house, and we will tell you if that is what we are actually looking at.
Do you service systems you did not install?
Yes, on all major brands regardless of who installed the equipment or who has serviced it before. See the brands we work on.
What if you find something wrong?
You get the reading, a photo, and a price. Then you decide. Nothing gets repaired during a maintenance visit without you approving it first, and taking time to think about it is a completely reasonable answer.
