Being straight about it
Why some companies say no
It is a fair question, and there are real reasons rather than laziness. Ductless systems are genuinely different from the split systems most residential technicians spend their careers on, and a shop that is not set up for them is being honest by declining rather than experimenting on your equipment.
All of which is solvable by being set up for it. So we are.
Your system already knows what is wrong
This is the one genuine advantage ductless has over conventional equipment. It self-diagnoses and reports, and if you can tell us the code before we arrive, we can often bring the part with us.

Look at the indoor head
Most wall-mounted units report faults through the small LED indicators on the front panel, or on a display if the model has one. Some report through the wall controller or the remote instead.

Record the pattern, not just the fact it is blinking
Count the flashes and note which light is flashing, or photograph the display. On many systems the code is expressed as a number of blinks with a pause between repeats, and the count is the whole message.

Note the brand and model
The same code means different things on different manufacturers. A model number from the indoor unit and the outdoor unit turns a blinking light into a specific fault.

Tell us when you book
We look it up against that manufacturer's documentation before we come out. It frequently means arriving with the right part rather than arriving to diagnose and returning later.
We deliberately have not published a code table. Codes vary by manufacturer, series and model year, and a generic list on a website is exactly how people end up buying the wrong part. Tell us your brand and what it is doing, and we will give you the real answer for your system.
Six ways ductless is genuinely different
Understanding these explains most of what goes wrong, and why the failures are not the same as on a conventional system.
Flare connections instead of brazed joints
The refrigerant lines connect with mechanical flare fittings rather than being brazed. Faster to install and the single most common leak point in the entire system, because the torque has to be right and frequently was not.
Inverter-driven variable speed
The compressor ramps up and down rather than switching on and off. Far more efficient and much better at holding a steady temperature, but it means diagnosis by pressures alone is unreliable without understanding what the inverter is commanding.
The indoor coil is in the room
No ductwork, no filter cabinet. The evaporator coil and blower wheel sit inside the head on your wall, a few feet from where you sit, which is excellent for efficiency and consequential for cleanliness.
A very small condensate line
Condensate leaves through a narrow drain running inside the line set cover, usually by gravity. It blocks more easily than a conventional drain and when it does, water appears down your wall rather than in a drain pan.
Communication wiring between units
Indoor and outdoor units talk to each other continuously over a control cable. Damage or a poor connection in that cable produces communication faults that look like a dead system but are not.
Multi-zone shares one outdoor unit
Several indoor heads can run from one condenser, each controlled independently. It also means an outdoor unit fault takes out every room at once, while an indoor head fault affects only that room.

Refrigerant leaking at a flare connection
$400 – $1,600The most common ductless failure by a distance, and it usually traces back to the installation rather than the equipment. A flare cut or torqued incorrectly seeps slowly for months or years. Cooling weakens gradually, and adding refrigerant without correcting the joint simply resets the clock. More on leak detection.
A fouled blower wheel and coil
Quoted after diagnosisThe indoor head runs damp and warm and collects dust, and the blower wheel is a barrel of thin blades that is genuinely awkward to reach. Fouling reduces airflow, cuts cooling and produces the musty smell ductless systems are known for. Covered properly in the next section.
A blocked condensate drain
$125 – $300That narrow gravity drain clogs with dust and biological growth, and the water then finds the next available route, which is usually down the wall beneath the head. Caught early it is a straightforward clear. Left alone it is a drywall repair.
Communication faults between units
Quoted after diagnosisA damaged control cable, a corroded terminal or a connection that was never quite right. Produces a system that appears dead or behaves erratically while both units are actually fine. Frequently misdiagnosed as a failed board.
Outdoor fan motor or capacitor
Capacitor $150 – $350 · Fan $400 – $800Ductless outdoor units use the same broad component families as any air conditioner, and they fail in Fresno heat the same way. Often brand-specific parts rather than universal replacements. More on capacitors.
Inverter or control board failure
Quoted after diagnosisThe most expensive common ductless repair, and the one where warranty status matters most. Manufacturer parts warranties on ductless equipment are frequently generous, so the model and serial get checked before anything is quoted. How coverage works.
Filters that were never cleaned
Free to correctDuctless heads use washable mesh filters that lift out in seconds, and almost nobody knows they exist. Clogged filters cut airflow, reduce cooling and accelerate the fouling above. If yours have never been rinsed, start there before anything else.
The complaint we hear most
If yours smells musty, that is fixable
Ductless heads are notorious for it, and it is not a defect. The coil sits wet through every cooling cycle, the blower wheel is warm, and the whole assembly is in a room rather than in an attic. Biological growth in that environment is close to inevitable without periodic cleaning.
What people usually try is spraying something through the vent, which reaches almost none of the surface actually causing the smell. The growth is on the coil face and in the blades of the blower wheel, behind the housing.
A proper deep clean means dismantling the head, bagging it, and washing the coil and wheel thoroughly. It is a different job from a filter rinse and it is what actually resolves the odor rather than masking it for a couple of weeks.
What a real deep clean involves
- The head is bagged so wash water and everything in it is captured rather than ending up on your wall and floor.
- Housing removed to reach the blower wheel, which is where most of the smell lives.
- Coil face and wheel washed with cleaner appropriate to the materials, not whatever was in the truck.
- Drain pan and line cleared at the same time, since a slow drain is often part of why it stayed wet.
- Filters rinsed and refitted, and you get shown how to do that yourself every few weeks.
Worth saying plainly
Most ductless failures are installation failures
Conventional systems are fairly forgiving of a rushed installation. Ductless is not. A flare cut badly, a joint torqued by feel, a line set left too long, a vacuum pulled for five minutes instead of properly — each of those produces a system that works fine for a year and then does not.
That matters when you are deciding what to do about a mini-split that has given trouble. If the equipment itself is sound and the fault traces back to how it went in, correcting the installation issue is usually far better value than replacing anything.
A mini-split that has leaked twice does not have bad luck. It has a flare joint nobody has properly addressed.

Where a ductless repair is the same work as on any other system — a refrigerant leak, a condensate drain, a capacitor, an outdoor fan motor — it is priced the same as we publish sitewide. Ductless-specific work is quoted after diagnosis because brand and model drive both the part and the labor.
Deep cleaning, control boards, communication faults and brand-specific components are quoted after we have identified the fault and checked warranty status against your model and serial.

Do you repair mini-splits in Fresno?
Yes, on all major brands, single zone and multi-zone, wall mounted, ceiling cassette and floor mounted. A number of local companies decline ductless work because it needs manufacturer-specific diagnostics, calibrated torque tooling and an understanding of inverter control. My mini-split is flashing a code. What does it mean?
It depends entirely on the manufacturer, and that is why we have not published a generic code table. The same blink pattern means different things across brands, series and model years. Count the flashes, note which indicator is flashing, photograph the display if there is one, and give us the brand and model. We look it up against that manufacturer's documentation, which often means arriving with the correct part rather than returning later.
Why does my mini-split smell musty?
Because the indoor coil stays wet through every cooling cycle and the blower wheel sits warm and damp behind the housing, which is ideal for biological growth. It is extremely common and it is not a defect. Spraying something through the vent does not reach the surfaces causing it. A proper deep clean means bagging the head, removing the housing and washing the coil face and blower wheel directly.
Why does my mini-split keep losing refrigerant?
Almost always a flare connection. Ductless refrigerant lines join with mechanical flare fittings rather than brazed joints, and a flare that was cut poorly or torqued by feel rather than to specification seeps slowly for years. Refrigerant is never consumed, so repeated top-offs mean the joint was never properly addressed. It is a correctable installation fault rather than a reason to replace the system.
Water is running down the wall under my mini-split. Why?
The condensate drain has blocked. Ductless drains are narrow gravity lines running inside the line set cover, and they clog with dust and growth more readily than a conventional drain. When they do, the water leaves the pan and runs down the wall. Turn the unit off to stop producing condensate and have the drain cleared, typically $125 to $300.
How often should mini-split filters be cleaned?
Every few weeks during heavy use, and most owners have never done it because they did not know the filters existed. They are washable mesh screens that lift out of the front of the head in seconds, rinse under a tap and go back in once dry. Clogged filters cut cooling, raise running cost and accelerate the fouling that causes odor.
One room is not cooling but the others are. What is that?
On a multi-zone system, a fault affecting only one room points at that indoor head, its communication wiring, or the expansion valve serving that zone rather than at the outdoor unit. When the outdoor unit is at fault, every zone stops. That distinction narrows the diagnosis considerably before anyone arrives.
