Should you repair itor replace it?
The company telling you to replace usually profits from replacing. Here is the actual framework — the cost thresholds, the refrigerant problem, and the six factors that decide it — so you can work the answer out yourself.
The short version
Most systems get replaced earlier than they need to be
Not because contractors are dishonest — because replacement is the answer that is fastest to reach, easiest to justify, and most profitable to deliver. It takes twenty minutes to quote a new system. It takes an hour to actually find out whether the old one is finished.
There are absolutely situations where replacing is the right call, and we will tell you when yours is one of them. But "it is fifteen years old" is not a diagnosis, and it is not a reason on its own.
The question is never how old the system is. It is what specifically failed, what it costs to fix, and what you get for the money either way.
The two rules everyone quotes
You will hear both of these from contractors and from the internet. They are useful starting points and neither one should decide it on its own.
Rule one
The 50% rule
If the repair costs more than half of what a properly installed replacement costs, replacement is usually the better use of the money.
Example: A $4,200 compressor replacement on a system a new install would cost $10,000 to do properly. That is 42% — close enough that the rest of the system's condition decides it.
Where it fails: it assumes you know the real replacement cost. A lowball quote that skips permits, load calculation and duct work makes any repair look expensive by comparison.
Rule two
The $5,000 rule
Multiply the system's age in years by the repair cost. If the result is over $5,000, lean toward replacement. Under, lean toward repair.
Example: A 14-year-old system with a $400 repair is 5,600 — technically over. A 14-year-old system with a $250 capacitor is 3,500 — clearly repair.
Where it fails: it treats every year as equal wear. A maintained system in a shaded yard is not the same machine as a neglected one baking in full Fresno sun, even at identical ages.
What actually decides it
Six factors, weighed together. A technician who has not established all six has not given you enough to decide with.

What failed — component or sealed system
This is the biggest fork in the road. Capacitors, contactors, motors, boards and thermostats are ordinary wear items and get replaced at any age. A compressor or evaporator coil failure is a different conversation entirely, because you are replacing the expensive heart of the machine inside a body that has aged around it.

Repair cost against real replacement cost
Not against the cheapest quote in town. Against what a permitted, load-calculated, properly verified installation actually costs in Fresno — which for most homes lands somewhere in the five-figure range once ducts and code compliance are included. Compare like for like or the math lies to you.

Refrigerant type
A system running R-22 with a refrigerant leak is usually a replacement conversation, because the refrigerant itself has become the expensive part. Newer systems on R-410A and the low-GWP refrigerants replacing it do not carry that penalty. This single fact changes the answer more often than anything else on this list.

Repair history
A first failure in twelve years is a repair. A third failure in two seasons is a system telling you something. What matters is the pattern and whether the failures are related — three unrelated small parts is different from a slow cascade caused by one underlying problem nobody found.

Warranty status
Manufacturer parts warranties commonly run ten years on registered equipment. If your compressor is covered, a repair that looked like $4,000 might be labor only. We check before quoting, because it can flip the entire decision and it is the kind of thing that gets skipped when someone is in a hurry to sell a system.

The rest of the system
New equipment on collapsed ductwork underperforms and disappoints. If the ducts are shot or the original system was sized wrong, that has to be part of the plan either way — and sometimes the honest answer is fix the ducts and keep the equipment you have.
Which way your situation leans
Find the lines that describe your system. Most homes land clearly on one side once the diagnosis is real.
Lean repair
- The failure is a component — capacitor, contactor, motor, board, thermostat, drain
- The repair is a small fraction of a proper replacement
- Everything else measures within spec — charge, airflow, amp draw
- It is the first significant failure this system has had
- The failed part is still under manufacturer warranty
- Ductwork is sound and the system was sized correctly
- You are selling or moving within the next year or two
Lean replace
- Compressor or evaporator coil failure on an older, out-of-warranty system
- The system runs R-22 and has a refrigerant leak
- Third significant failure within a couple of seasons
- The repair approaches half of a properly installed replacement
- It was sized wrong originally and has never kept up in July
- A gas furnace has a safety fault that cannot be properly corrected
- You are staying put and running costs now dominate the math
The refrigerant question
What is in your system changes the answer
Refrigerant is the one variable that can turn a straightforward repair into a replacement conversation on its own, and most homeowners have never been told which type they have.
It is printed on the data plate of your outdoor unit. Worth knowing before anyone quotes you anything, because it determines what a leak repair is actually going to cost.
What the data plate tells you
R-22
Older systems, generally pre-2010. Production ended in 2020, so remaining supply is reclaimed and expensive. A significant leak on R-22 usually pushes the decision toward replacement on cost alone.
R-410A
The standard for roughly the last fifteen years. Still widely available and serviceable, though it is being phased down for new equipment under federal rules. Repairs remain practical.
R-454B and other low-GWP blends
What new residential equipment ships with now. If you are replacing, this is what you will be getting, and it is worth confirming your installer is trained and equipped for it.
When it is genuinely close
Some decisions do not resolve cleanly. These are the questions that usually break the tie.

How long are you staying in the house?
Under two years and a repair almost always wins — you will not recover a replacement's cost in a sale, and buyers rarely pay a premium for a new condenser. Ten more years and efficiency starts to matter a great deal.

What is the repair actually buying you?
A $1,500 repair that buys five more years is good value. The same $1,500 on a system with two known failing components and no warranty is a deposit on the next breakdown.

Has anyone measured the ductwork?
If your real problem is a duct system that lost a third of its air to a 150-degree attic, a new condenser will not fix it and you will be disappointed twice.

Can you get through the season?
A repair that carries you to fall lets you plan a replacement properly — get quotes, arrange financing, schedule it when installers are not slammed. Buying a system in a 108-degree panic is how people overpay.

Does the quote include the parts nobody mentions?
Permit, load calculation, code verification, duct modifications, electrical, disposal. A replacement quote without them is not a replacement quote, and it makes repair look worse than it is.

Use this to compare quotes. A number missing half these items is not cheaper — it is a different job.
- A load calculation, not a match of the old tonnage
- A pulled mechanical permit in your jurisdiction
- Independent state code verification after install
- Duct inspection, and repairs where they are needed
- Correct line set handling, or replacement where required
- Airflow measured and commissioned, not assumed
- Equipment registered so the warranty actually applies
- A labor warranty stated in writing

Common questions
My system is 15 years old. Should I just replace it?
Not on age alone. A fifteen-year-old system that measures within spec and needs a $300 part gets repaired. The same system with a leaking evaporator coil and no warranty is a different answer. Age changes the odds, not the decision. See how we diagnose.
How long should an air conditioner last in Fresno?
Typically 12 to 18 years, but run hours matter more than years. Fresno systems work far harder each season than the national average, so a maintained unit in a shaded yard can comfortably outlast a neglected one by half a decade.
Is it worth repairing an air conditioner that uses R-22?
It depends entirely on what failed. An electrical component or motor is worth repairing at almost any age. A refrigerant leak on R-22 usually is not, because the refrigerant itself has become the expensive part of the job.
Will a new system really lower my PG&E bill?
Usually yes, though rarely by as much as a sales pitch suggests, and almost never enough to pay for itself outright. If the ducts leak or the house is under-insulated, those cost you more than the equipment's efficiency rating does. More on duct sealing.
Should I replace the furnace at the same time as the AC?
Often, but not automatically. If both are the same age and the coil has to come out anyway, doing them together saves labor and matches the equipment. If the furnace is much newer or in good condition, there is no reason to throw it away.
