A completely dead system is a different problem from one that runs badly — and it is usually a power or safety-switch issue rather than a mechanical failure. Several of the causes cost nothing to fix. Work through the six checks below first.

Dead usually means cut off, not broken

When an air conditioner runs badly, something inside it has failed. When it does nothing at all, something has usually interrupted power or a safety control has done exactly what it was designed to do and shut the system down.

That distinction matters, because there are at least four switches in a typical Fresno home that will stop your system dead, and most homeowners do not know all of them exist. One is a light switch on the wall by the furnace. One is inside the cabinet door. One is a float in the drain pan.

A meaningful share of "my AC is dead" calls end with a switch being flipped back on. Check these before you book anything.

All safe, none require tools, and the first four cost nothing at all. Work through them in sequence rather than skipping around.

The thermostat

Is the screen on? If it is blank, try fresh batteries. If it is lit, confirm the mode is COOL and set the target several degrees below the current room temperature, then wait five minutes.

Why the wait: most systems have a built-in delay of a few minutes before the compressor restarts, which protects it from short cycling. A system that appears dead is sometimes just inside that delay. Give it five minutes before deciding nothing is happening.

Both breakers in the main panel

Look for a tripped breaker. Most homes have two relevant ones — a smaller breaker for the indoor furnace or air handler, and a larger double-pole breaker for the outdoor condenser. A tripped breaker sometimes sits in a middle position rather than clearly OFF, so push it fully off before switching it back on.

Important: reset it once only. If it trips again, something is drawing more current than it should. Repeatedly forcing power back into that fault risks damaging the compressor and creates a genuine fire risk. Leave it off and call.

The outdoor disconnect box

There is a small gray box on the wall beside your outdoor unit. Open the cover and check that the pull-out handle is fully seated. It can be pulled partly out during service or landscaping and left that way.

What it is for: the disconnect isolates the outdoor unit so a technician can work on it safely. If it is out, the condenser has no power at all while the indoor blower may still run. Push it firmly back in the correct orientation, and do not force it if it does not seat easily.

The service switch by the furnace

Find your furnace or air handler — usually in a garage, hallway closet, attic or crawlspace. There is often an ordinary-looking light switch on the wall beside it, or on the unit itself. Make sure it is on.

Why this one catches people: it looks exactly like a light switch, and it gets flipped off by painters, cleaners, someone working in the attic, or a child. It kills the entire system. We have driven out for this more than once, and it is a genuinely common cause of a system that died for no apparent reason.

The cabinet door panel

Look at the front panel of the furnace or air handler. Is it properly seated and latched? If somebody recently changed a filter, push the panel firmly back into place.

The reason: there is a safety interlock switch behind that panel which cuts power when the door is removed, so the blower cannot run with the cabinet open. A panel that is not seated flush leaves that switch open and the system will not run at all. A filter change is the most common reason it happens.

The condensate drain and float switch

Look at the drain pan under the indoor coil, and at the drain line. Is there standing water? Is there a small plastic device on the drain line or in the pan with two wires running to it?

This is the one nobody knows about: that device is a float switch, and when the condensate drain blocks and the pan fills, it deliberately shuts the whole system off to stop water damaging your ceiling. Your system is not broken — it is being protected. Clearing the drain resolves it, and on some setups the thermostat also goes blank because it is powered through the same circuit.

A specific case

If the thermostat screen is completely blank

A dead thermostat display narrows things considerably, because it tells you the low-voltage control circuit has lost power rather than the equipment having failed.

Most thermostats run on 24 volts supplied by a transformer inside the furnace or air handler, sometimes with battery backup. When the screen goes dark, that supply has been interrupted somewhere — and several of the causes are on the checklist above.

Work through those first. A blank thermostat is frequently the symptom of a tripped float switch or an open cabinet door, not a failed thermostat.

What a blank screen usually means

  • Dead batteriesThe simplest cause on battery-powered models, and worth ruling out first.
  • A tripped float switchOn many installations the safety switch interrupts the same circuit that powers the thermostat.
  • An open cabinet door switchA furnace panel that is not seated cuts power to the control circuit entirely.
  • A blown low-voltage fuseControl boards carry a small automotive-style fuse that protects the 24-volt circuit. It blows when there is a short in the thermostat wiring.
  • A failed transformerLess common, and diagnosed by measuring the control voltage at the board.

What it turns out to be when the checks do not fix it

A blocked condensate drain

$125 – $300

The float switch did its job and shut everything down. Common in Fresno because dust and biological growth build up in the drain line over a season. Clearing it is straightforward, and it is one of the more satisfying calls because the system was never broken.

A failed contactor

$150 – $300

The switch that feeds the outdoor unit. If its control coil fails, nothing pulls the contacts together and the condenser stays completely silent while the indoor blower may still run normally.

A failed run capacitor

$150 – $350

Usually produces humming rather than silence, but a completely failed capacitor can leave a system that does nothing audible at all. Confirmed with one microfarad reading. More on capacitors.

A blown low-voltage fuse or failed transformer

Diagnosed first

The 24-volt control circuit runs everything. A blown fuse on the control board usually means a short somewhere in the thermostat wiring, so replacing the fuse without finding the short simply blows the next one. The fault matters more than the part.

A failed thermostat

Genuinely less common than people assume, because most blank-screen cases trace back to something else on the control circuit. Worth confirming rather than replacing on suspicion. More on thermostat faults.

A control board fault

The board coordinates the whole system, and when it fails nothing responds. Most boards have a diagnostic LED that flashes a fault code, which is the first thing a technician should be reading rather than guessing at.

A wiring or electrical supply fault

Varies

Rodent damage to low-voltage wiring is not unusual in Valley attics and crawlspaces, and a corroded connection at the disconnect or a failed breaker will produce the same dead system. Found by measuring rather than by inspection.

Three things not to do

All three are common, and all three turn a small problem into a much larger one.

  • Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again

    One reset is reasonable. A second trip means a genuine fault is drawing excess current, and forcing power back into it repeatedly risks destroying the compressor and starting a fire. Leave it off.

  • Do not bypass or jumper out a float switch

    There are guides online explaining how to jumper the safety switch to get the system running again. That switch is the only thing standing between a blocked drain and water coming through your ceiling. Clear the drain instead. We will not bypass one, and neither should anyone else.

  • Do not open the electrical panel on the outdoor unit

    The capacitor inside stores a dangerous charge even with the breaker off and the disconnect pulled. Checking the disconnect handle from outside the box is fine. Removing the service panel is not a homeowner job.

Why won't my AC turn on at all?

A completely dead system is usually a power or safety-control problem rather than a mechanical failure. What is a float switch and why did it shut my AC off?

A float switch sits in the condensate drain pan or on the drain line and shuts the system down when water backs up. It is deliberate protection against a blocked drain flooding a ceiling. Your system is not broken, it is being protected, and clearing the drain resolves it. Never bypass one.

I reset the breaker and it tripped again. What now?

Leave it off and call. A breaker that trips repeatedly is reporting a genuine fault, commonly a failing compressor, a seized motor, a shorted component or damaged wiring. Continuing to reset it risks serious equipment damage and creates a fire risk.
