AC tripping the breaker
Your breaker is notthe thing that is broken.
It is a safety device, and it is working. Something on that circuit is drawing more current than the wiring is rated to carry, and the breaker is the only thing standing between that fault and your house. Reset it once. If it goes again, leave it off.
How many times have you reset it?
This is the question that matters most, and the honest answer determines what you should do in the next five minutes.

Once is fine
A single trip can be a surge, a brief overload, or a one-off. Resetting once and seeing what happens is reasonable.

Stop there
A second trip is the breaker telling you it was not a fluke. Leave it off and book a diagnostic rather than trying again.

Every reset forces power back into a live fault. Heat builds in wiring and terminals you cannot see. This is how electrical fires start.
The rule is simple: reset once, and only once. If it trips again, switch it off, leave it off, and call. The house being warm is a much smaller problem than the one the breaker is currently preventing.
Do not reset it at all if any of this is true
In these situations, even one reset is a bad idea. Leave the breaker off and call.
- You can smell burningAny hot plastic or electrical smell, at the panel, the outdoor unit or a vent.
- There are scorch or discoloration marksBrowning, melting or soot around the breaker or the disconnect box.
- The panel or breaker feels warmA breaker that is warm to the touch or buzzing is not something to reset and walk away from.
- There is water anywhere nearStanding water at the panel, the disconnect or the outdoor unit. Do not touch anything.
- The breaker will not stay setIt springs straight back to tripped. That is a hard short and it needs a technician, not persistence.
- The outdoor unit is making a bad noiseGrinding, banging or a loud hum alongside the trip. More on AC noises.
If you do reset it, stand to one side of the panel, use the dry hand, push the breaker fully to OFF first, then firmly to ON. If anything about the panel gives you pause, do not do it at all.

The breaker is the cheapest thing protecting your house
A circuit breaker exists to interrupt power when current exceeds what the wiring can safely carry. Wire has a rating. Push more current through it than that and it heats up, the insulation degrades, and eventually something in a wall or an attic gets hot enough to matter.
When yours trips, it has measured that condition and acted, in a fraction of a second, correctly. It is not being oversensitive and it has not "gone bad" just because it is inconvenient. It is the only component in your house whose entire job is to notice this.
A breaker that keeps tripping is not a fault. It is a diagnosis, delivered free, by something that has no reason to lie to you.
When it trips tells us a great deal
The timing of the trip narrows the cause more than almost anything else you could tell us. Note which of these matches yours before you call.
Pattern one
It trips the instant the system tries to start
An immediate trip points at a short circuit or a compressor unable to turn. There is no gradual build-up of current here — something is drawing enormously the moment power arrives.
- A seized or locked-rotor compressor drawing locked rotor current and never getting moving
- Compressor windings shorted to ground, which is a hard electrical fault
- Damaged wiring between the disconnect and the unit, including rodent damage
Pattern two
It runs for a while, then trips
A delayed trip is a heat and current story. Something is making the system work harder than it should, current climbs above rating as it does, and the breaker eventually intervenes.
- A condenser coil packed with valley dust, driving head pressure and amp draw up
- A weak run capacitor making the compressor labor on every cycle
- A seized or failing fan motor, so heat cannot leave the system
- A compressor losing efficiency, drawing more current to do the same work
Pattern three
It only trips on the hottest afternoons
A very Fresno pattern. The system is marginal rather than broken, and only crosses the line when the outdoor temperature pushes it there. It usually gets worse across a summer rather than better.
- High head pressure from a dirty coil or restricted airflow, worst when it is 108 outside
- A capacitor drifting out of tolerance, which struggles most under load
- A breaker weakened by age and repeated trips, now nuisance-tripping below its rating
Pattern four
It trips randomly, with no pattern at all
Intermittent trips usually mean an intermittent connection. Something is making and breaking contact, arcing as it does, and producing heat where there should not be any.
- A loose or corroded connection at the breaker, disconnect or unit terminals
- A failing contactor arcing as its contacts degrade
- The breaker itself failing, which does happen and is confirmed by measuring rather than assuming
The specific causes

A failing run capacitor
$150 – $350The most common cause we find and the cheapest to correct. A capacitor out of tolerance forces the compressor to draw far more current than it should on every start, and eventually that exceeds the breaker rating. One microfarad reading confirms it. More on capacitors.
A condenser coil packed with dust

A seized or failing fan motor
$400 – $800A motor with failing bearings draws increasing current as it fights friction, and a fully seized one draws locked rotor current until something stops it. If the outdoor fan is not turning, that is also damaging your compressor. More on fan motors.
A failing contactor
$150 – $300Pitted contacts arc rather than making clean contact, producing heat and erratic current draw. Often the cause behind trips that follow no obvious pattern.
Low refrigerant from a leak

A failing or grounded compressor

Damaged or rodent-chewed wiring

A worn or undersized breaker

This is a real cause, and it is also the explanation people reach for first because it is the most convenient one. It gets confirmed by measuring actual amp draw against the rating, never assumed.

Never install a larger breaker to stop the tripping
It comes up more often than it should, sometimes suggested by someone trying to be helpful. The logic sounds reasonable: the breaker keeps tripping, so fit one that will not. It is the single most dangerous thing you can do about this problem.
The breaker is not sized to the air conditioner. It is sized to the wire. That conductor was selected to carry a specific current safely, and the breaker protects it from ever exceeding that. Fit a larger breaker and the fault does not go away — you have simply removed the only thing that was going to stop it.
What actually happens
The wiring now carries more current than it was rated for, with nothing set to interrupt it. It heats up inside a wall or an attic where nobody can see it. The insulation degrades. Eventually the failure that the breaker was preventing simply happens somewhere less convenient, with no protection at all.
- 1Breaker sizing is not a preference. It is determined by the conductor and the equipment's rating, under the electrical code.

Common questions
Why does my AC keep tripping the breaker?
Because something on that circuit is drawing more current than the wiring is rated to carry.
